Vowel teams

  1. rain

    Two vowels, one sound

Hana sees rain out the window. In rain, the a and i sit together. They make one sound, a long a. When two vowels team up, the first often says its name.

  2. tail
    ai
    day
    ay

    The long a team

Ai and ay both say long a. Ai likes the middle of a word, like rain and tail. Ay likes the end, like day and play.

  3. tree
    ee: long e
    leaf
    ea: long e
    boat
    oa: long o

    Long e and long o

Ee and ea both say long e, like tree and leaf. Oa says long o, like boat and road. Ow can say long o too, like snow.

  4. snow
    long o
    cow
    ow sound

    Watch out for ow

Ow does not always say long o. In snow and grow, it does. In cow and now, it says ow, like when you bump your knee. Try both sounds and pick the real word.

  5. green

    Try this

Hana's list says sail, green and coat. Find the team in each word: ai, ee and oa. Now read them. You should hear long a, long e and long o.

For parents

  • Say: when two vowels go walking, the first one often does the talking. It says its name.
  • Practice words: rain, tray, play, tree, feet, sleep, leaf, boat, road, snow.
  • Point out that one sound can have two spellings, like boat and note.

Away from the screen: Look through a picture book for words with ee, ai and oa. Write each one in a list under its team.
