Plural nouns

  1. apples

    More than one

Yusuf has one apple. His mom gives him two more. Now he has three apples. Plural means more than one. Most nouns just add s.

  2. boxes

    Some words add es

Words that end in s, x, sh or ch add es. Say them and you hear an extra beat. One box, two boxes. One dish, two dishes.

  3. mouse
    one
    mice
    more than one

    Some words change

Some words change instead of adding s. One child, two children. One mouse, two mice. One foot, two feet. One tooth, many teeth.

  4. Some words stay the same

A few words do not change at all. One sheep, three sheep. One fish, ten fish. The number tells you how many.

  5. lunches

    Try this

One lunch, two ___. Lunch ends in ch, so add es. Lunches! One man, two ___. Man changes to men. Mans is not a word.

For parents

Goal: Your child learns to make nouns plural with s or es, and learns tricky ones like children, mice and sheep.

  • Ask: does the word end in s, x, sh or ch? Then it needs es.
  • Practice the tricky ones: child and children, mouse and mice, foot and feet, tooth and teeth, man and men, goose and geese.
  • Count real things together and say the plural: one spoon, three spoons.

Away from the screen: Sort things in the kitchen. Line up one cup and many cups, one dish and many dishes, then say each plural aloud.
