paint today painted yesterday It already happened
Today Hana paints a bird. Yesterday she painted a cat. Painted tells about the past. Words like yesterday and last night are clues.
- washed
Many verbs add ed
Many verbs just add ed for the past. Wash becomes washed. Kick becomes kicked. If the verb already ends in e, just add d. Smile becomes smiled.
run now ran past Some verbs change
Some verbs do not use ed at all. They change into a new word. Run becomes ran. Go becomes went. Eat becomes ate. See becomes saw.
goed Not a word went Right Not real words
Runned, goed and buyed are not real words. Say ran, went and bought. If adding ed sounds funny, the verb may change instead.
1swim today 2swam yesterday
Try this
Today I swim. Yesterday I ___. Swam! Now try this one. Today I play. Yesterday I ___. Played. One verb changes and one adds ed.
For parents
Goal: Your child learns to tell about the past by adding ed to many verbs and using special forms like ran, went and ate.
- At dinner, ask: what did you do today? Listen for past tense words.
- Practice pairs out loud: go, went; eat, ate; sit, sat; make, made; see, saw; run, ran; write, wrote.
- If your child says goed, simply repeat it the right way: oh, you went to the park.
Away from the screen: Look through a picture book and find words that end in ed. Then find a few that change, like went or saw.
