    Pick a core

To make a pattern, first pick a core. Your core can be star, heart.

    1. 1
      star
    2. 2
      heart
    3. 3
      star
    4. 4
      heart
    5. 5
      star
    6. 6
      heart

    Repeat the core

Now say the core again and again. Star, heart, star, heart, star, heart. That is your pattern.

    1. 1
      sun
    2. 2
      kite
    3. 3
      kite
    4. 4
      sun
    5. 5
      kite
    6. 6
      kite

    A core with 3 things

A core can have 3 things. Sun, kite, kite. Say it again: sun, kite, kite, sun, kite, kite.

    1. 1
      1st
    2. 2
      2nd
    3. 3
      3rd
    4. 4
      4th, change it

    Check your pattern

Apple, orange, apple, apple. The 4th one breaks the pattern. It should be orange.

  2. move up
    move right
    move up
    move right
    move up
    move right

    Robot patterns

You can make a robot pattern too. Pick a core of blocks, like move up and move right. Use it again and again to climb.

For parents

Goal: Your child learns to make a pattern by picking a core and repeating it, and to check a pattern for mistakes.

  • Let your child pick the core. Ask: how many things are in your core?
  • Read their pattern out loud together and listen for a spot that sounds wrong.
  • The labs after the cards let your child fix a necklace, design their own bead pattern and paint a staircase with the robot.

Away from the screen: Make a bead necklace, a row of blocks or a line of fruit with a pattern your child chooses. Then ask them to make a robot dance pattern, like step, step, turn.
