Find the repeats

  1. move right
    move right
    move right

    The same block again

Some programs use the same block again and again. That is a repeat. Here move right shows 3 times.

    1. 1
      1
    2. 2
      2
    3. 3
      3
    4. 4
      4

    Count the repeat

When you spot a repeat, count it. A frog hops 4 times. Touch each frog as you count.

  2. move up
    move up
    move up
    collect the star

    Straight lines repeat

A long straight line on a board is a repeat. The star is 3 squares up. So move up shows 3 times.

  3. move down
    move down
    move right
    move right

    Two repeats in one

This program has two repeats. Move down shows 2 times. Then move right shows 3 times.

  4. move right
    move up
    move right
    move up

    A group can repeat

Sometimes a group of blocks repeats. Move right, then move up. That group shows 2 times.

For parents

Goal: Your child learns to spot steps that repeat in a program, count how many times they repeat, and notice groups of steps that repeat.

  • Have your child tap the table once for each repeated step while counting out loud.
  • Ask: which step comes again and again? How many times? For groups, ask: what part starts over?
  • The labs after the cards are games. Your child reads a program to guess where the robot stops, builds a star hunt and sorts things that repeat.

Away from the screen: Do a repeat dance. Call out jump, jump, jump, clap and let your child copy it, then tell you which move repeated and how many times.
