Up and down
Up is toward the top of the board. Down is toward the bottom. This robot moves down to the star.
- Left
Left and right
Left and right go opposite ways. Hold up both hands, palms out. Stick out your thumbs. Your left hand makes the letter L.

Opposites
Left and right are opposites. Up and down are too. Go right 2, then left 2. The robot is back home.

Stay on the board
This robot is on the top row. It cannot go up. That would leave the board. So it goes down to the flag.
For parents
Goal: Your child learns the four directions, up, down, left and right, and uses them to move a robot one square at a time in three short game labs.
- Show the L trick: hold both hands out, palms away, thumbs out. The left hand makes an L.
- Ask: what is the opposite of up? What is the opposite of left?
- Before your child taps a move block, have them point the same way with a finger.
Away from the screen: Play Simon Says with directions. Say step left, jump up, crouch down, step right, and switch roles so your child gives the orders.
