Colors

  1. أَحْمَر

    Colors start with alif

All six color words here start with alif. Alif wears a small mark on top. Since the first letter is the same, read the second letter.

  2. أَحْمَر
    ahmar: red
    أَزْرَق
    azraq: blue

    Red and blue

Ahmar means red. Its second letter is haa. Azraq means blue, like a clear sky. Its second letter is zay, with one dot on top.

  3. أَخْضَر
    akhdar: green
    أَصْفَر
    asfar: yellow

    Green and yellow

Akhdar means green, like grass. Its second letter is kha, with a dot on top. Asfar means yellow, like a ripe banana. Its second letter is saad.

  4. أَبْيَض
    abyad: white
    أَسْوَد
    aswad: black

    White and black

Abyad means white, like milk. Its second letter is ba, with one dot below. Aswad means black. Its second letter is seen, with three teeth.

  5. أَحْمَر
    haa: no dot, red
    أَخْضَر
    kha: dot on top, green

    One dot makes a difference

Ahmar and akhdar look alike at the start. Haa has no dot, so ahmar is red. Kha has a dot on top, so akhdar is green.

For parents

Goal: Your child learns to read and say six colors in Arabic.

  • All six words start with the same letter. Help your child look at the second letter, just after the start on the right.
  • Say the words while pointing at real colors: ahmar for red, azraq for blue, akhdar for green, asfar for yellow, abyad for white and aswad for black.
  • Ask: what color is the sky? What color is a banana? Let your child answer in Arabic.

Away from the screen: Play I spy with colors at home. Say "I spy something azraq" and let your child find something blue. Then switch turns.
